What Are Orthobiologics?
Orthobiologics is a broad term for substances derived from biological sources that are used to support the body's response to musculoskeletal injury or disease. The category includes platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate, amniotic and birth-tissue products, and other preparations.
These treatments are not appropriate for every patient or every condition. They are considered as part of a comprehensive orthopedic evaluation when the diagnosis, clinical picture, and available evidence support their use. They do not replace surgery when surgery is indicated, and they do not cure arthritis or reliably rebuild cartilage.

Orthobiologic treatment may be considered for selected musculoskeletal conditions involving:
- Knee, including selected patients with knee osteoarthritis
- Shoulder and rotator-cuff-related conditions
- Hip-region conditions
- Tendons and tendon attachment sites
- Ligaments and other soft tissues
- Other musculoskeletal conditions when supported by the diagnosis and clinical evidence

Platelet-Rich Fibrin Matrix
PRP / PRFM Injections
PRP is prepared from a patient's own blood and converted to PRFM (platelet-rich fibrin matrix) using the SELPHYL® closed-system platform. PRFM is a gel-like form designed to improve delivery and retention at the treatment site. Dr. Blythe uses leukocyte-poor PRFM for selected joint and soft-tissue conditions.

Bone Marrow Aspirate
Bone marrow aspirate-based procedures are performed in an operating-room setting for carefully selected patients. These procedures are not a cure for arthritis and do not reliably rebuild cartilage.

The clinical evidence for orthobiologic treatments varies significantly by treatment type and diagnosis. Evidence is comparatively stronger for selected patients with mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis and certain tendon disorders, but study results and professional recommendations remain inconsistent across the literature.
These treatments are not FDA-approved for most orthopedic conditions. PRP is prepared using FDA-cleared devices, but device clearance is not the same as FDA approval of the treatment for a specific condition. Amniotic and birth-tissue products are not FDA-approved for orthopedic use.
